Purwokerto is the capital city of Banyumas Regency in Central Java. If you’re traveling from Jakarta, it takes only about 5-6 hours by train to reach the city. Unlike Yogyakarta, Semarang, or Surabaya, Purwokerto remains a hidden gem that has yet to be overrun by tourists, making it a perfect destination for those seeking an authentic experience.
This city is also the cultural heart of Banyumasan Java, which has distinct differences from Yogyakarta’s Javanese culture. The Banyumasan culture is generally more relaxed, and most locals speak the ‘Ngapak’ Javanese dialect, which sounds louder and, to some, amusing upon first hearing.
Beyond its unique language, Banyumasan culture is also known for its traditional ‘Ebeg’ or Kuda Lumping performance—a mix of dance, acrobatics, and ritualistic elements involving ancestral spirits. Ebeg remains a beloved folk entertainment, frequently performed during special celebrations.
While Purwokerto embraces modern living, it still preserves its rich cultural heritage and traditions. This is evident in the city’s strong appreciation for ‘Kentongan’ performances—a traditional bamboo musical ensemble that continues to draw large crowds.
Still, there are some places you definitely shouldn’t miss. Just a short drive from Purwokerto, Baturaden is a natural paradise with stunning waterfalls, unspoiled nature, and arguably the best experience you can have in the area.
What to Do and See in Purwokerto
Exploring Purwokerto is a nice experience. The city isn’t too big, there are no sprawling shopping malls, and the traffic is relatively light. Since Purwokerto is off the typical tourist trail, international tourism is still quite new here.
Get ready for a truly local experience—there are hardly any signs in English, and most locals will eagerly try to communicate with you, even if they only know a few words of English. It’s the perfect place to feel the warmth of Indonesian hospitality and experience the authentic, non-touristy side of the country.
Visit Pasar Wage
Pasar Wage is the largest traditional market in Purwokerto and serves as the city’s main commercial hub. Here, you’ll find many legendary shops that have been operating for decades. The market is also home to hidden culinary gems, such as Toko Roti Go, which has been baking traditional bread since 1898, and stalls selling Gudeg Banyumasan, a local version of the famous Javanese dish that is only available late at night.
Explore the Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) Museum
The BRI Museum showcases the history of banking in Indonesia. It features a fascinating collection of banking artifacts, including a replica of the first-ever bank in Purwokerto, known as De Purwokertosche Hulp-en Spaarbank der Inlandsche Bestuursambtenaren. Visitors can also see displays of old currencies, especially those used during the Dutch colonial era.
Relax at Alun-Alun Purwokerto
Located in the heart of the city, Alun-Alun Purwokerto is a popular gathering place for locals and often hosts public events. You can take a leisurely stroll around the square, enjoy street food, or simply relax in the open space.
Right across from the square, you’ll find Rita Supermall, the largest shopping center in Purwokerto, where you can shop for various necessities like clothes for very affordable prices and without need of bargain.
You can also find the Great Mosque Baitussalam there, and you might be able to peek inside outside of prayer times. While you don’t need to be fully covered from head to toe, it’s important to dress modestly—cover your shoulders and knees, and women may be asked to wear a headscarf.
Enjoy the City View from Menara Teratai
If you’re spending the night in Purwokerto, don’t miss the romantic ambiance at Menara Teratai, the city’s newest landmark. From the top of the tower, you can admire a panoramic view of Purwokerto’s cityscape. The area around Menara Teratai is also bustling with street food vendors, offering local favorites such as angkringan-style snacks and mie ayam (chicken noodles). Additionally, you can rent electric scooters to explore the area in a fun and unique way.
Things To Do in Baturraden
If there’s one reason to visit Purwokerto, it’s definitely Baturraden. Tucked away at the foot of Mount Slamet, this little gem offers the perfect blend of nature and fresh mountain air. The temperature drops noticeably as you get closer, and it feels like stepping into a green oasis—surrounded by untouched nature, rice fields, and the kind of peace and quiet that makes you want to take a deep breath and just relax.
Waterfalls
Baturaden is home to dozens of waterfalls, each offering its own unique charm. Many of these waterfalls are easily accessible and well-maintained for tourists, featuring mowed lawns, stone pathways, stairs, and seating areas where you can relax and enjoy the views. These spots are perfect for families and those who prefer a more comfortable nature experience.
However, if you’re looking for a wilder, more natural vibe, venture just a bit further. Waterfalls that are around a kilometer’s walk from the main roads offer a completely different experience. Here, nature is untouched—no crowds, no manicured paths—just raw beauty and the soothing sounds of cascading water. You might even have the place all to yourself, surrounded by lush greenery and a true sense of adventure.
Curug Telu
Curug Telu is one of Baturraden’s must-visit waterfalls. As the name suggests (telu means three in Javanese), this spot is known for its trio of impressive waterfalls that create a powerful and picturesque scene.
The journey to Curug Telu is an adventure in itself. A simple path leads to a hidden waterfall behind a rock, accessible through a short, walkable cave. The water here is shallow and refreshingly cool—perfect for dipping your feet. Further down, you’ll find a deeper pool where thrill-seekers can jump from a bridge or directly off the rocky cliff.
To reach the main attraction—the three large waterfalls—you’ll need to descend quite a few steps. These waterfalls are strong and beautiful, offering a unique chance to swim. However, keep a safe distance from the falls, and remember that this is a conservative area, so both men and women swim fully clothed.
Curug Tirta Sela
Another great waterfall worth a visit. Getting there is easy—a short 10-minute walk from the parking area takes you to the waterfall. At the base, you’ll find a natural pool with crystal-clear water, perfect for a quick dip. There’s also a viewing platform offering panoramic views of the waterfall and the surrounding landscape.
Curug Tirta Sela is ideal for those wanting to experience unspoiled nature and enjoy a bit of tranquility away from the crowds. Don’t forget to pack your own snacks, as there are no food stalls nearby!
Curug Jenggala
If you’re up for a bit of adventure, Curug Jenggala is well worth the trek. The waterfall boasts three parallel streams, with the central cascade being the strongest. The walk to get there is a treat in itself, winding through lush greenery with the cool mountain air adding to the vibe. Don’t miss the iconic heart-shaped wooden platform—it’s the perfect spot for those Instagram-worthy shots.
Curug Penganten
Just behind the well-maintained path to Curug Jenggala, you’ll find Curug Penganten, a hidden gem that feels like a well-kept secret. The name Penganten means wedding couple in Javanese, inspired by the twin cascades that resemble a pair of newlyweds.
The trek to this waterfall is a bit more rugged, adding to its off-the-beaten-path charm. With fewer visitors around, you might even have this peaceful spot all to yourself. It’s the perfect place to relax, soak in the sounds of nature, and cool off in the clear water.
Backindo Tip: Don’t forget to bring enough water and start your trip early in the morning to avoid the heat of the midday sun.
Curug Bayan
Curug Bayan is one of the more accessible waterfalls in Baturraden, making it a great option for families and those looking for a relaxed experience. The path to the waterfall is well-maintained, with stone steps and clear signage guiding the way. The waterfall itself isn’t too high, but it creates a charming and serene atmosphere, perfect for a refreshing dip or simply soaking your feet in the cool water.
What makes Curug Bayan especially family-friendly are the shallow natural pools at its base, ideal for kids to splash around safely. There are also picnic spots with seating areas where you can enjoy a meal surrounded by nature.
Pancuran Pitu: Natural Hot Springs
Just a year ago, Pancuran Pitu was a hidden gem with a raw, natural charm. This natural hot spring, rich in sulfur and known for its therapeutic benefits, was a place where you could enjoy a traditional sulfur massage right in the open air. Back then, visitors could bathe directly under the waterfall, letting the warm, mineral-rich water cascade over them while surrounded by untouched nature. The atmosphere was rustic and authentic—perfect for those who love a bit of adventure and the simplicity of nature.
However, over the past few months, Pancuran Pitu has undergone quite a transformation. The area is now beautifully designed in a Japanese onsen style, offering more privacy and comfort. Private bathing areas allow guests to relax undisturbed, and the overall ambiance feels much cozier and more intimate.
To be honest, I preferred the original, more natural version of Pancuran Pitu. But even with its new look, Pancuran Pitu is still worth a visit. The view from here is simply extraordinary.
Backindo Tip: If you crave more nature and adventure, there’s a way to keep that spirit alive. A jungle trail leads from Curug Jenggala to Pancuran Pitu, offering a scenic and adventurous route to the hot springs.
Telaga Sunyi – The Silent Lagoon
If you’re looking to escape the crowds and reconnect with nature, Telaga Sunyi is the perfect spot. This crystal-clear lagoon lives up to its name—Telaga Sunyi means Quiet Lake in Indonesian. The water is so clear you can see straight to the bottom, revealing a magical underwater world. For the best experience, visit early in the morning when the light filters through the trees, creating a serene and almost mystical atmosphere.

Off-Road Adventure in Kebun Raya Baturaden
Looking for something more thrilling? Try exploring Kebun Raya Baturraden on an off-road jeep adventure! This adrenaline-pumping ride takes you deep into the forest, crossing rugged terrain and muddy tracks. Depending on the package you choose, the off-road experience lasts between 30 minutes to 1.5 hours.
Explore the Surroundings of Baturraden
Got extra time? Take a leisurely walk around Baturraden to enjoy its picturesque mountain landscapes. You can visit local dairy farms, where lush green fields resemble those in New Zealand. The streams and small rivers here are amazingly clean, and you can even dip your feet in the cool water for a natural reflexology experience.
Aside from the natural attractions, Baturraden also has several unique man-made attractions, such as The Village, Small World, and Bukit Bintang. Along the roads leading to Baturraden, you’ll also pass many flower and plant vendors, creating a beautiful and refreshing journey before you even reach your destination.

Baturraden Adventure Forest
If you’re looking for a fun-filled day with the kids, Baturraden Adventure Forest is a must-visit! The kids will love flying through the trees on the zip-lining courses and testing their balance on the rope trails, while gentle nature paths are perfect for little explorers. It’s the ideal spot to let the kids burn off some energy, breathe in fresh mountain air, and share a bit of adventure as a family.
The Village
For a full day of family fun, head to The Village Purwokerto. There’s a cute mini zoo where kids can pet animals, boat rides for a bit of adventure, and craft workshops to spark creativity. On sunny days, little ones can splash around in the small outdoor pool or enjoy the spacious grounds.
What’s great about The Village is that it’s perfect for all weather. When the rain rolls in, the indoor play area is a lifesaver—kids can play for hours while parents relax.
How to Get Around Purwokerto
Exploring Purwokerto is easy, with several transportation options available depending on your needs. Here are some of the best ways to get around the city:
Ride the Trans Jateng and Trans Banyumas
For solo travelers looking for an authentic local experience, riding the Trans Jateng or Trans Banyumas Bus (local bus) is a great option. Similar to Jakarta’s TransJakarta, these buses are slightly smaller but still provide a comfortable and budget-friendly way to get around. The Banyumas route connects Purwokerto to Baturraden and nearby areas use Trans Jateng from Purbalingga to Purwokerto. The best part? A single ride costs only Rp4,000 and can pay cash, making it one of the most affordable ways to explore the city. With multiple stops around town, it’s a convenient and cost-effective choice for budget travelers.
If you plan to go to Baturaden, it is better to start from Halte SMKN 2 Purwokerto, take the Corridor 2 (K2) bus, and arrive at Baturaden Halte. There are several stopping points, especially at tourist spots in Baturaden, served by the Trans Banyumas Corridor 2 (K2) bus, such as Ketengger Tourism Village and Lokawisata Baturraden, which is located right across from the Trans Jateng Baturaden bus stop.
Rent a Motorbike
For more flexibility, renting a motorbike is a great way to navigate the city and venture into Baturraden. Purwokerto is relatively easy to explore, and unlike major cities in Java, traffic here is not as chaotic, making it safe for travelers to ride a motorbike. However, be cautious when heading towards the waterfalls and Baturraden. The roads can be quite narrow, hilly, and even slippery when it rains. If you’re not confident with motorbike driving, it’s best not to try it here.
Use Gojek or Grab
Both Gojek and Grab are great options for getting around Purwokerto. They’re easy to use, affordable, and reliable within the city. But when it comes to Baturraden, booking a one-way ride might not be the best idea. It’s quite common to get stuck there, as it can be difficult to find a car or motorbike to take you back to the city, especially in remote spots or late in the day.

Hire a Local Guide
Because many of the attractions in Baturraden are quite spread out and tucked away, hiring a local driver and guide is the best way to explore the area. A good guide can pick you up from the train station or your hotel, take you to the top attractions, and even introduce you to hidden local food gems. They can adjust the itinerary to fit your needs—whether you’re looking for an easygoing day of sightseeing or a more adventurous jungle trek.

The city’s Purwokerto Station is a major railway hub on the Jakarta-Surabaya route, making it well connected to other cities in Java.
- From Jakarta: The journey takes only 5-6 hours.
- Executive or Luxury Class: If you prefer a premium travel experience, you can take an Executive or Luxury train from Gambir Station. There are at least 13 daily trains connecting Gambir to Purwokerto, offering a comfortable and hassle-free ride.
- Economy Class: Budget travelers can take a train from Pasar Senen Station, which offers multiple affordable options. However, it’s best to avoid the “Serayu” train, as it takes a longer scenic detour through Bandung and Cilacap, stopping at multiple stations along the way.
- From Yogyakarta: Travel time is around 4 hours. Several trains operate on this route, including Joglosemarkerto, Ranggajati, and Kamandaka.
- From Bandung: The journey takes around 5-6 hours. The best train option is the Serayu train, which connects Bandung to Purwokerto. However, keep in mind that this train stops at many stations along the way.
- From Semarang: Travel time is around 4-5 hours. Trains like Kamandaka and Joglosemarkerto provide regular service between the two cities.

By Bus
Another option is taking a bus to Purwokerto. The process is simple, as you only need to head to the nearest intercity bus terminal.
- From Jakarta: You can take a bus from several terminals, including:
- Kampung Rambutan Terminal (East Jakarta)
- Kalideres Terminal (West Jakarta)
- Tanjung Priok Terminal (North Jakarta)
- The bus ride from Jakarta to Purwokerto takes approximately 8 hours, depending on traffic conditions. Some of the best bus operators for this route are Sinar Jaya, Dieng Indah, and Rosalia Indah, with ticket prices starting at around IDR 150,000 (around USD 9.05).
- From Yogyakarta: If you’re traveling from Yogyakarta, you can take an Efisiensi bus, a popular executive-class bus offering a comfortable ride for just IDR 70,000 (around 4.22).

This dish is a staple in daily life for people in Purwokerto and the greater Banyumas region, making it easily available everywhere—from traditional markets and street vendors to restaurants. No matter where you dine in Purwokerto, mendoan is often served as a side dish. Pair it with sweet soy sauce and chopped chilies for an authentic local experience.
Soto Sokaraja
Soto Sokaraja is a fragrant and flavorful soup made with richly spiced broth, topped with shredded meat, vermicelli, and crispy fried shallots. What makes this dish unique compared to other Indonesian soto is the addition of peanut sauce, which gives it a thicker texture and a more complex, nutty taste.
This signature dish of Sokaraja can be found along Sokaraja Street, just a short distance from Purwokerto’s city center. Whether you prefer beef or chicken, Soto Sokaraja is a must-try for anyone craving an authentic, heartwarming Javanese meal.
Getuk Goreng
Also found along Sokaraja Street, Getuk Goreng is another local specialty that you shouldn’t miss. Getuk itself is a traditional Javanese snack made from steamed cassava, mashed until smooth like mashed potatoes, and mixed with palm sugar and grated coconut for a naturally sweet flavor.
What makes Getuk Goreng different is its final step—deep frying. This process creates a crispy outer layer while keeping the inside soft and chewy. The most famous Getuk Goreng in Sokaraja is H. Tohirin’s shop, but if you prefer a less sweet version, try Getuk Goreng Bu Diyem, which offers a more balanced taste.
Street Food at Pasar Wage (Traditional Market)
As mentioned earlier, Pasar Wage is not just the commercial hub of Purwokerto, but also a hidden gem for legendary food. From traditional snacks to hearty meals, this market is a paradise for food lovers.
If you’re into street food, Pasar Wage won’t disappoint. Some must-try local treats include:
- Kue Carabikang Manna – A beautifully flower-shaped, soft, and slightly crispy rice flour cake with a rich coconut flavor.
- Es Puter Timlo – A traditional coconut-based ice cream with a smooth, creamy texture.
- Serabi Solo – A Javanese-style pancake with a crispy edge and a soft, fluffy center, often topped with coconut or chocolate.
For main dishes, Soto Lawas is a great option if you want a classic, aromatic soup. Alternatively, if you prefer something filling, there are several Nasi Padang stalls around Pasar Wage, offering a variety of spicy and flavorful Minang cuisine.

I truly love the lounge, where there’s a classic piano in the center that guests can play. How’s breakfast? It’s fabulous! There are so many dishes to try, from local specialties to traditional Indonesian and Western cuisine.
44 Guest House Syariah
This is a new, cozy spot where you’ll feel right at home. The owners are super friendly and love kids, making it a perfect choice for families traveling to Purwokerto. If you’re visiting with your family, I highly recommend this place. But if you are a non-married couple, better to find something else.
Hotel Besar Purwokerto
Hotel Besar offers a classic hotel experience with comfortable rooms and friendly service. It’s centrally located, making it a good base for exploring Purwokerto. The hotel is ideal for both short stays and longer visits, with reasonable rates and reliable amenities.
Baturaden
Villa Saung Suluh
This villa is perfect for groups looking for a staycation. Villa Saung Suluh is located near the main street of Baturraden. The villa features three bedrooms, a swimming pool with a mountain view, and a relaxing garden.
The facilities are quite complete, including a fully equipped kitchen, making it a great option for those who enjoy cooking during their stay.

You can try various activities, such as fishing in village ponds, feeding fish, learning to cook traditional dishes, understanding local customs, and many more.
In addition, Banjarnegara is known for its pottery craftsmanship, where you can experience making ceramics from clay or even trying hand-drawn batik with Gumelem’s unique patterns.
For adventure lovers, you can also go rafting on the Serayu River, one of the longest rivers in Central Java.
Banjarnegara also holds hidden natural beauty that remains largely unexplored. I think this town is perfect for travelers looking for off-the-beaten-path destinations.
Dieng High Land
Looking for a breathtaking travel destination? Escape to Dieng. Dieng is a highland region located in Banjarnegara Regency, with some parts extending into Wonosobo Regency. Due to its high-altitude location, Dieng is a favorite destination for those seeking cool, refreshing air.
Activities you can do in Dieng include: watching the sunrise from Sikunir Peak, visiting Telaga Warna, taking pictures from Ratapan Angin Peak, exploring Sikidang Crater, and even trying fun hiking at Mount Prau. In addition, there are many hidden gems around the Dieng Plateau, such as Dringo Lake, Candradimuka Crater, and waterfalls. If you are visiting Banjarnegara or Wonosobo, Dieng is highly recommended.
Wonosobo and Temanggung
If you are looking for a cool and refreshing city atmosphere, you can visit Wonosobo and Temanggung. These two cities are located at the foot of Mount Sindoro and Mount Sumbing, giving them a pleasant, cool climate.
Wonosobo has historical attractions in the city center and is also famous for Tambi Tea Plantation, a well-known tea estate. Meanwhile, Temanggung offers breathtaking natural destinations, such as Posong Nature Park with stunning mountain views, the traditional Papringan Ngadiprono Market, the historical Liyangan Site, and Umbul Jumprit, a sacred natural spring—along with many other attractions.
Exploring these two cities is a delightful experience, as both have cool weather, historical town centers with old architecture, and remain peaceful and untouristy.
Kebumen and Cilacap
If you prefer a beach getaway, you can visit Kebumen and Cilacap, located south of Purwokerto. These two regions offer a wide selection of beaches, almost similar to those in Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta. As a bonus, you’ll find fresh seafood vendors at several beaches, such as Pantai Jetis and Teluk Penyu.
Additionally, Kebumen has a beach club and modern tourist attractions, providing a fun and refreshing seaside experience.
